Strong,Until I Wasn't

There's a certain kind of tiredness that sleep doesn't fix.It's the kind that comes from carrying too much for too long.

Five unread messages.

I was exhausted and on the verge of collapsing on the bed after hours of studying, and there I was typing out comforting messges when all I probably needed was to be comforted.

One friend was overwhelmed about exams.

One friend was crying about a heartbreak.

One was stressed about family problems.

And there I was-typing out thoughtful messages,choosing the right words,saying the right things.

I'm here for you.

You'll get through this.

I believe in you.

And I meant every word.

But somewhere in between comforting everyone else, a quiet though crept into my mind.

Who do I go to?

I sat with that question for a long time.But the truth is,when people start seeing you as a "the strong one",they stop asking if you're okay.

They assume you’re handling things.
They assume you don’t break.
They assume you always know what to do.

You become the safe space.
The listener.
The one who understands.
The one who stays calm during chaos.

And at first, it feels good.

It feels meaningful to be trusted.
To be someone people can lean on.

But no one talks about what happens when the person everyone leans on starts collapsing quietly.

No one talks about how exhausting it is to constantly hold space for others while suppressing your own emotions.

Because being the strong friend often means learning how to suffer silently.

You say, “I’m just tired.”
When really, you’re emotionally drained.

You say, “I’m okay.”
When really, you feel like you’re carrying the weight of everyone—including yourself.

And after a while, something strange happens.

You become so used to being needed that asking for help starts feeling uncomfortable.

Almost wrong.

You tell yourself:
Other people have it worse.
I shouldn’t burden anyone.
I can handle this myself.

So you keep going.

Even when you’re overwhelmed.
Even when you’re hurting.
Even when you’re running on empty.

And the hardest part?

Sometimes, no one notices.

Not because they don’t care.
But because you’ve become so good at hiding your pain.

You mastered smiling through exhaustion.
You perfected sounding okay.

You built an identity around being strong.

It’s not just the tiredness. It’s the unfairness of it.

  • You give so much, but receive so little.
  • You’re the safe place for everyone, but you don’t have a safe place.
  • You’re expected to be steady, but you’re allowed to be human.

And the worst part? You feel guilty for feeling this way. Like if you’re the strong one, you shouldn’t need anything. You shouldn’t be tired. You shouldn’t want to say “I can’t do this.”

But guess what? You’re allowed to.

But strength was never supposed to mean carrying everything alone.

Read that again.

Strength is not emotional silence.
Strength is not suppressing your pain until it consumes you.
Strength is not constantly pouring from an empty cup.

Real strength also looks like honesty.

It looks like saying:
I’m not okay today.
I need support too.
I’m tired of being strong all the time.

And maybe that’s the reminder you need today.

The strong friend needs support too.
The listener needs someone who listens back.
The one who checks on everyone deserves to be checked on too.

You do not have to earn rest.
You do not have to justify your exhaustion.
And you do not have to carry everything alone.

Sometimes strength looks less like holding everything together…

And more like allowing yourself to fall apart in safe hands.

So if you’ve always been “the strong friend,”
this is for you.

I hope you remember that you are allowed to be soft.
Allowed to be vulnerable.
Allowed to need people.

You are human before you are strong.

And humans were never meant to carry the world alone.

I want you to know this: you don’t have to be the strong one to be loved. You don’t have to carry everyone to be valued. You don’t have to be perfect to be worthy.

The people who truly care about you? They want to know the real you. The one who’s tired. The one who’s hurting. The one who needs help.

And if they don’t? That’s okay too. You’ll find people who do.

 You’ve been so good to everyone else. Now be good to yourself.

Rest when you’re tired. Say no when you need to. Ask for help when you’re struggling. Let someone hold you when you’re shaking.

You’re not less strong because you’re human. You’re more human because you’re honest.

And that’s the bravest thing there is.
